Celia in Florida

Smiling Celia

Here’s a few pictures of Celia that Teen Missions posted on Facebook. We haven’t heard from her directly yet, but it’s great to see that she’s there and smiling!

Thanks TMI for posting these photos: keep ‘em coming!

Confirmation!

Thank you everybody for your generous support! Celia has raised just under $4000—enough to pay for her actual trip from Florida to Malawi and back! The money has been submitted to Teen Missions International and she is good to go! Before now, we were hoping and trusting for provision for her to go. Now it’s finally real.

We’ve purchased her airfare from Spokane, WA to Florida, so subsequent cash donations will go towards travel from Robson, BC to Spokane, WA for her flight to Boot Camp; accommodations on the way there; work boots; the USD $100 fee (per leg of the trip from Spokane to Florida) for a “unaccompanied minor”; spending money, etc etc etc…

For these expenses, only cash/cheque donations directly to Celia Friesen will work. Cheques can still be made out to Teen Missions, but these won’t be applied to Celia now that we’ve met her basic expenses. They’ll go directly to Teen Missions for their other operating expenses.

Again, cash and cheques made out to Celia aren’t tax deductible, but are gratefully received.

Donating Online

Hi Folks

We just figured out how to donate electronically to Celia’s missions trip with Teen Missions. Teen missions says:

The total amount of your gift to Teen Missions is tax-deductible. However, credit card companies charge a percentage (2.5%) on each transaction and only the amount remaining after these fees are charged will be applied to the project or missionary that you specify. You may also donate using an electronic check. The full amount of electronic check donations will be applied to the account of the project or missionary that you specify. After your online donation, you will receive a confirmation email.

Please specify “Team Member” and add “Celia Friesen” in the comment box.

Teen fundraising for Africa: Castlegar News

Celia Friesen

By Jed Anderson, Castlegar News Reporter
(Reprinted from the Castlegar News, Thursday, April 8, 2010, page 14.)

A 12-year-old girl in Robson is planning to travel to Malawi this summer to help children who have been orphaned due to AIDS. Malawi is a third-world country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Celia Friesen has lived in Trail and Castlegar.

“Since I was five years old, I have wanted to help orphans. I love babies and children and really want to help,” said Friesen.

News from Malawi April 2010

Malawi, a small land-locked country in southern Africa, is known as the “warm heart of Africa.” The people are very open and friendly, clearly living up to their motto.

The landscape of Malawi is mountainous in parts and the beautiful Lake Malawi stretches along almost the entire length of the country. Of the 13 million citizens, 900,000 are living with HIV/AIDS and life expectancy is only 43 years. There are up to 400,000 AIDS orphans. Around 80% of the population survives on less than $1 a day. The major source of income for Malawi is agriculture, especially tobacco. Though Christianity is widespread in Malawi, there are many who practice witchcraft or other tribal beliefs. There is also a large population of Muslims.
