Eye Of The Tiger
By Robbie Creweso
“Amy”
I looked up into the face of White Wolf.
“WE must go! Before the White people return!”
“You mean you must go.” I told him.
White Wolf gave me a strange look.
“No, Amy. I left you once. I’m NEVER leaving you again.”
Book One
A Journey Begins
Chapter 1
“No”
The word hung in the air.
Just like the sound of an hand striking the flesh of the speaker.
My mother breathed in sharply.
I was glad that I had turned my head. Looking at my mother just laying there. Dieing. I looked back at the Native man who had struck me. I saw White Wolf rise to his feet behind the striker; but he made no comment.
“No,” I repeated.
“I will not look for a lost arrow. My mother is dieing and she needs me more than you.” I glared at the man.
He looked furious. I turned my back on him. Mother was breathing heavily now. She had just given birth to my new baby sister. But the blood loss had been too great. My sister Alice only 4 years old, was holding the new born. I stroked my mothers head.
“What shall we call the baby?” I asked her.
Mother gulped air then spoke.
“Name her after grandmother….. Becky. Becky Jane.” Mother toke a last deep breath.
“Hunter…………”
Mother’s head rested on my hand. Her eye’s were open in death. I touched her eye’s letting the lids fall down. Alex started to cry, he rested his head on mothers belly as he cried. I did not cry, ma would have hit me if I did.
The natives were eager to leave, I knew this but were weren’t moving till ma was buried.
“Alex, stop crying. The Shawnee are not to happy right now.”
I paused.
“And ma would have your hide, if she knew that you had cried, over her.”
Alex looked up.
“But…..”
“Alex! If ma wanted to be cried over she would have asked us too!”
Thankfully Alex stood up and wiped his tears away. The Shawnee stared at us.
“Alex get branches and rocks we will cover ma up.”
“Yes Amy.”
We gathered up any piece of foliage that we could. Even using the make shift shelter the Shawnee had made for us. Out of a wood-frame with chopped down branches. After that, Alex carved with a sharp rock that he had found. On a tree the words:
MARY JANET HUNTER
Then I wore :
JULY 2, 1731
The Shawnee who struck me suddenly shouted.
“Wego!”
All 20 Shawnee came to life. One tried to grab me, but White wolf shook his head.
“No.”
And the brave left me alone. I picked Becky up and put her in my left arm. Alice was tired so I carried her in my other arm. Alex flowed close behind me. As we went along; into the woods of Ontario. It was all too soon that Alex had to rest. I was tired but I needed to stay strong. Shifting the weight of my sisters I looked at my 6 year old brother.
“Can I piggy back?” He asked me.
To the amazement of my captors I nodded and went on my knees. Little arms around my neck and little legs around my waist. I stood like a queen and walked on. Alice too put her arms around my neck. Alex did not mind. I sank into thoughts about four days ago. When the Shawnee made a jump start into my life.
I was kneading bread; mother was stirring a pot over the fire. Alice was working on her patchwork blanket. Our neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Wood were in the house next to ours. I could hear Mrs. Wood complaining to her husband. Father was out to town. Just then Alex came screaming in.
“INDAINS! INDAINS!!!” He had screamed. Ma had stopped stirring and shouted at Alex to get Alice and run out the back door. I ran to the gun shelf were Pa’s rifle hung. I took it down just as a gun shot split the air in half. Indian war cry’s rang out loud. I told ma to get to Alex. I was in the door way, looking at the savages run into the Woods house. I took aim and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. I swore under my breath and dropped the gun and ran out the back door. Ma was very pregnant so she wasn’t running as fast as I would have liked. Alex and Alice were not to far off. They were just a few feet away from the woods wen a big Shawnee native had stepped out of the woods and picked up my brother. Ma stopped in her tracks. A younger Shawnee stepped out too. He was about my age maybe a year older. He had my sister under one arm. Then I did the most bravest thing ever. I slowed to a walk. Strode passed my mother and up the the Shawnee with my sister.
“Leave my sister ALONE!” I told him. At the same time I grabbed my sister from him. Alice ran to Ma. Turning to the other native I fumed at him.
“Put…………… My brother… DOWN!”
Alex was released and he ran behind me. The Shawnee snarled at me. (He would also later hit me because I didn’t fetch a arrow.)
And grabbed my hair, yanking it hard downwards; and put a knife too my neck.
“Go on, kill me then.” I had looked right into his black eye’s. My own showing no fear. Again he snarled and I swear he was going to do it when the other boy spoke up.
“No.”
The knife holder looked at him in amazement. The boy continued in Shawnee. Knife holder snarled again. But put his knife away. Still holding onto my hair; he dragged me to the front of my house. Then threw me onto the ground. My mother followed suit with Alex and Alice. Mr. and Mrs. Wood were laying dead in front of their house. Shawnee were looking through the loot that they had taken from their house. A few of them were trying to set fire the the house with out much success. About five of them there taking the stuff out of my house. I watched the looters. If there was some thing they did not like they would ask the rest if they liked it. If they rest did not like it They smashed it. At one point the boy who had spoken up to my death came up. In his hands was a painting my Auntie Debby had made. On it was a white wolf, looking at some thing to the right.
The boy looked at me; then pointed to the wolf. Looked at me with a question written on his face.
“It’s a white wolf-” I began to explain. But then he pointed to him-self then the wolf again.
“Oh!” Realization dawned.“Amy”
“Your name is White Wolf!”
He nodded. Then gently put down with the rest of the loot. But it was later smashed by one of the Shawnee. White Wolf had not said anything when he found out. But I could tell that he was not too happy about that. Then we were dragged off into the woods. Both houses a flame…….
“Amy.” Alice tugged on my ear.
“Mmm, What?” I blinked.
“You just stopped a half minute ago. An the Shawnee have been shouting at you for a while…..” She explained.
“Oh!” I looked at the furious Shawnee who picked on me.
“Sorry I was thinking of some thing else.” I managed a smile.
He growled and spun on his heel. I kept a steady pace with my three passengers. For about three hours, but I was aching all over. Plus the sun was too hot. I was tanning already. Finally we stopped at a little creek with some deeper parts. I let my passengers drop to the ground. We sat on a rock, looking at the water. Some of the Shawnee jumped in soaking them self’s in the cool water. One Shawnee Tossed a large piece of read at Alex. He caught it and handed it to me. Just as I was breaking it into four pieces. Becky started to cry. She was hungry too! I some how managed to quite her a little. But she still cried. I looked at White Wolf.
“She needs milk.” I told him.
“We two days from village.”
“She’ll die before then!”
White Wolf looked at my personal tormentor.
“Weasel-in-the-house. You go find.”
Weasel-in-the-house protested. But White Wolf was firm. So Weasel-in-the-house went off grumbling. Alex and Alice ate the food. I merely nibbled at it. Becky quietened down; Alex looked at the water longingly.
Again I looked at White Wolf.
“May my brother and sister drink some water?” I asked.
White Wolf nodded; as he sat on a rock, a little up the bank.
That way he could see every one. Alice was up on her feet in a flash.
“Thanks Amy!!” I watch my younger sibs run the river to drink. I was dieing to drink as well but I had to stay up here. And care for Becky. As I watched my sibs with a critical eye. I saw them start to slash one another with the water. Grabbing handfuls and sprinkling it on one another. I gave a low whistle that I often used at home. They looked at me, I shook my head. Alex gulping looked at White Wolf.
“Mister White Wolf. Can me and Alice swim in the water?”
White Wolf smiled at the: “Mister” Then nodded again. Gleefully they jumped into the water. I shook my head, Alice was in a dress too!
Becky started crying again. Just the I head a noise from the woods. Looking back; I saw the older Shawnee sitting in the shade. Weasel-in-the-house was just coming out of the woods he threw some thing at me. It hit my face were it had just started to bruise. But I caught it with my right hand. It was a large clay pot with bees wax sealing. But I managed to open it and inside was Milk. I never knew haw he got it, nor did I ever find out. I dipped the bread into the milk so that it soaked up. Then put it over my sisters mouth. Bread and milk came into it. I used up the hole piece. Becky fell asleep soon after wards. Alice soon had enough of the water and climbed up next to me.
“Can I hold her?”
“After you dry.”
Alice sighed and lay on her back. Alex was now playing with the other braves in the water. Alice all too soon dried out. For some reason I was reluctant to give Becky up.
“Amy. You’ll die of heat stroke if you stay here to long.” Alice pointed out.
I sighed and gave Becky to Alice. Then I stood up and looked at White Wolf.
“May I go into the water?”
He nodded; then I looked at the water. A slow smile came to my face an evil one.
“Uh oh! Every one move back!” Alex told the Shawnee in the water.
They were confused but moved back. I took a few steps back than ran onto a rock. Then flung my self into the water. It was cool and wet down there. I let a few bubbles escape my mouth. So I sank to the bottom. My trousers stuck to my legs like glue. How long I was under there I did not know. I looked up; and saw feet kicking, under the water. There were a lot more people up there than before. My lungs reminded me that a breath wouldn’t kill me. I pushed my self up to the surface.
Whoosh! And I was up, Shawnee jumped back in shock. I realized they thought that I had drowned.
“Amy! You did the under water trick again!” Accused Alice from the bank. I saw all 15 of the Shawnee elders, including Weasel-in-the-house; were on the edge of the banks. Even White Wolf was there. I shook me head.
“Sorry!” I shouted to them.
“But I was enjoying my self!”
Dripping water I climbed out. And sat next to Alice.
