Wolf-Boy Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The Story Told At Last
“ I have NEVER seen a girl hit Tom before!” James said awe in his voice.
“He won’t forget that in a hurry.” Added Leann.
“I do hope he doesn’t.” Smiled Aurora.
James looked at her with new eyes. She was so beautiful yet deadly at the same time. He really, really liked Aurora.John liked Aurora too; he did not like the way the native kid was looking at Aurora.Aurora chatted away with her new girlfriends. The boys trying to jump into the conversation when they could.
BRIIIIING
“Oh, that’s the bell for the next class!” James said.
“Which class are you going too?” He asked Aurora as they went into the hall.
‘Umm, Native Studies.” She answered.
“I’m in that class. Come on, I’ll lead you the way!” James was very happy.
“Fine by me! See you guys later!” She called to the kids. Raven, Joseph and James lead the way to the next class it was packed with kids. All of them native. The teacher was a very old native but he was kind.
“AH, New girl?”
“Yes sir!” Aurora told them her name as the old man signed his name as.
Fire-bird.
She took a seat next to James and the teacher began.
“Today were are going to start on a new tribe. Does anyone know about the Deepwater Clan?”
The only hand that was up was Aurora’s.
“Aurora? You know of this ancient clan?” Fire-bird was surprised.
“Yes my grandmother was chieftainess of that clan.”
“Oh! Well will you tell us about this clan?” Aurora went to the front of the class and wrote on the blackboard.
White-storm.
Then she told the class. She told how the Deepwater clan were one with the earth. They did every thing to help nature. About the fishing trips that they had. About the laws, and finally she started to tell them of her grandmother. How she fell in love with a white man and got married to him. About Her grandfathers’ tragic death before Uncle Timmy was born. Of the finding of her orphaned mother, and Uncle Timmy’s death.
“Mom was the one who comforted father in those sad days. He had always done every thing with him. Timmy was 14 when he died. When father was 19 and Mom was 18. Father told mom that he loved her and a year later they got married. Then I was born soon after, I knew my grandmother very well. She was always with me. But when I was 5, Grandma got sick and died with her two wolf pups Thunder and Lightning the most well trained wolf-dogs ever. Then…I had just turned 6…”
Aurora had a flashback. The pain, the screaming pain. She sank to the floor. She was crying her eyes out. How long she sat there crying she did not know. At one point some one came up to her and put his or her arms around her. She had buried her face in the shoulder that was offered. The whole class came to around her murmuring soft things. Aurora croaked out the story.
“It..it was May…m…m…mom and I were in…in the car. We…we were doing f…f…fine. When…when we were hit…A car got..out out of con…t…t…t…trol and we were hit so very hard. M…m…m…mom was killed by the impact. I…i…i went through the back window and…Hit the car behind…u…us.” Aurora turned her back to the class and pulled her shirt up a little. There was a gasp. Her back was COVERED in scars where the glass had been smashed into her body. Big and little ones all over, crisscrossing her back. Aurora pulled her shirt back down and turned her tears coming down again. The friendly arms that had held her before came again. She put her head on the shoulder and cried again.
“We called it the ‘Incident.’ Dad…dad does not like talking about dead people. He…he says that it is no use talking about it. That they are never coming back…So why talk about it?”
When she was done crying she told how she traveled from place to place and how she hated it. When her story was over she looked at the one who had held her since her crying. It was James. His eyes were soft with understanding in them. As if he knew her pain. It was true James’s own mother had died in a car crash when he was small. He knew he had to help her in any way that he could. She needed him.
“Thanks.” Aurora told him noticing the wet spots on his shirt that she had put there. James smiled.
“No problem.”
Aurora smiled back.
BRIIIIIIIING!
“What’s next?” James asked her as they left there class.
“P.E.”
“I’ll lead you the way.” James smiled as he spoke.
“Just in case you lose yourself on your way to another planet.” Aurora Laughed. It was like chimes tinkling in a far off wind. He lead her to the girls change-room then was gone she entered and started to change in to her Gym strip. When the shirt came off there was a gasp from every one in the room.
“Aurora! What happened to you!!” Emily shouted. Aurora turned showing her red eyes from crying and said nothing she got changed with out a word then left to the gym. One native girl said quietly as she left.
“She was in a car crash and in that crash her mom was killed. Don’t talk about it, she will punch you if you do.”
Gym was fast for Aurora lots of kids were looking at her back. They did Basketball, which Aurora was good at. When School was over, She and James and the Owlcry twins were talking.
“So how do you guys get here?”
“By bus, duh!” Joesph answered. You could tell Joesph from Raven because Joseph had brown hair and Raven had black. Joesph’s real name was Crow but he hated that name.
“Hey Crow! Don’t do that! She didn’t know!” Raven scolded his older twin.
“DON’T CALL ME CROW!!!!!”
“Crow does not like his name so he calls himself Joseph after his father who died years ago.” Explained James.
“Oh. Thanks for clearing that up.” She paused.
“Thanks for letting me cry.” She added.
“No problem. I know how you feel.” He added.
“I had to help my older sister Suncry after my mom died.”
“Really??”
“Yup.” He smiled.
“We are connected in more than one way Wolf-Ann.”
She smiled at him.
“I’ll see you on Wednesday.”
‘Yeah. Bye James! Bye Crow and Raven!”
“I am NOT A CARRION BIRD!!!”
Aurora laughed all the way to her truck and drove away happy.
School had not been that bad today.
